Last year we posted about the fun illustrations we were doing for a new storybook app called, When Santa Got Sick! Version 2.0, which features some new illustrations and updates, has launched and is currently in the top 10 best sellers in the "children's religious" category on amazon/kindle apps.
2A! designed the characters and illustrated the scenes for Food4Thought Productions. Be sure to head over to amazon and download the app for yourselves!
When Santa Got Sick is an interactive storybook app written by Greg Perkins, that tells the tale of what happened when Santa was too sick to deliver presents one Christmas Eve.© Food 4 Thought Productions Inc.
For those of you who missed this over the weekend...
Here's my interpretation of the current debt ceiling debates in Washington, between Obama and Boehner. Our politicians are definitely acting "Looney!" =P
And here's a clip of the classic Looney Tunes short! Illustration © Joe Costantini
"Autobots... transform and roll out!"
This super-cool illustration of Optimus Prime was created by Greg Kleid, one of our awesome background artists. Greg drew this as a present for his nephews and we just had to post it. Man, I wish I had an uncle as cool as Greg!Illustration © Greg Kleid
"Ancient Spirits of Evil, transform this decayed form into Mumm-Ra the Ever Living!"
Now that I got that out of the way... Mumm-Ra is one of the all-time coolest villains! He starts off looking like a pathetic old man hobbling around in mummy rags, and with a few choice words becomes the baddest baddie the Thundercats have ever faced. Of course, in reality they usually beat him pretty easily, but we're talking about my distorted childhood memories here!
This guy's been a long time coming, so I hope you like him. I like Mums so much that I also did a warm-up sketch, which I've included below. Enjoy!

Just like my heroic team shot, these dudes are part of a larger drawing I’m doing for fun. Next up... Ma-Mutt!.
Until then... "Thundercats HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!"Illustration © Joe Costantini
Here comes Jackalman, the club-wielding (and sometimes mace-swinging) evil mutant jackal!
The evil mutants were the perfect examples of incompetent lackeys, and Jackalman here was no exception. These bumbling baffoons were always screwing up Mumm-Ra's evil plans. Speaking of Mumm-Ra, looks like he's up next!
Just like my heroic team shot, these dudes are part of a larger drawing I’m doing for fun. Remember to check back next week for Mumm-Ra.
Until then... "Thundercats HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!"Illustration © Joe Costantini
Watch out for Vultureman, the I-have-no-idea-what-the-heck-his-weapon-is evil mutant vulture!
Seriously, this is the weapon that came with the toy, but what is it? Some type of bird claw on a stick? Or maybe a bird cage cleaner?
Anyway, like my heroic team shot, Vultureman is part of a larger team drawing. Again, I'll be posting each villain as I finish, then the whole image once it's done. Next up is Jackalman!

Did you see the new images for Cartoon Network's Thundercats revamp?
I wasn't sure at first, but I think the new designs are growing on me. I'll have to reserve final judgement until I see the new show, but that news lit a fire under me to finish up my Evil Mutants illustration. So this week I'm posting my take on the mace-wielding Monkian!
Just like my heroic team shot, these dudes are part of a larger drawing I’m doing for fun. Next week I'll post my Vultureman, followed by Jackalman, Mumm-ra, his dog Ma-Mutt, and then the final team shot.
Until then... "Thundercats HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!"Illustration © Joe Costantini
I've been feeling nostalgic for simpler times lately, so I decided to draw one of my favorite characters from one of my favorite NES games... Mega Man! I spent way too many hours of my youth playing the first 3 games. =)
I've also included my WIP sketches below... Hope you like!

This dude started as a doodle in my sketchbook one night... then I just kept adding lines here and there while at lunch or on the phone, etc. Sometimes it's just relaxing for me to draw without any sort of end plan for an image. Plus, I always love the chance to sketch on paper again!
I added some quick grays for a background in Photoshop. I may end up coloring him in the future, time permitting of course. We'll see... Copyright © Joe Costantini
Here's another fun Hack/Slash image I drew towards the end of last year. Those of you who follow me on Deviant Art may have already seen this, but I thought it would be cool to post it here as well. This was a request from another DA member... he wanted to see Cassie wearing a pair of magical boxing gloves. A little quirky, but "what the heck" I thought... sounded like fun. ;)
I've also included a shot of the main steps in my process below. From left to right... First, I scribbled a few quick thumbnail sketches on a piece of paper. The one you see in the image is the direction I chose to go in. Second, I scanned and imported my thumbnail into Flash, and did a tighter sketch using the brush tool. Next, I made some minor tweaks to things in Flash – like shrinking her head to make it less cartoony – then went ahead and starting inking. Again, I ink in Flash with the brush tool. I tend to ink straight from my roughs, adding details and making changes as I go (as opposed to cleaning up the sketch first). Finally, I exported the inks from Flash and brought them into Photoshop to add the colors.
Hope you like it!

Here’s another critter concept I recently drew… well, maybe he’s more of a monster than a critter. In any case, the original sketch of this bad boy (see below) was one of numerous proposed styles we came up with for a recent client project. This particular look wasn’t chosen, but instead of letting him disappear into the vast cavern of my unused sketches, I decided to have some fun and try painting him. My peeps know I normally like to ink my art, but I’m trying to expand my horizons a bit. So here you have it… one angry dinosaur digitally painted in Photoshop, sans any ink lines.
I think he turned out pretty sweet! I’ll definitely be playing around with more digital painting in the future, so stay tuned… ;)

Welcome the Thundercats' whip-cracking-wise-cat, Tygra!
Tygra is probably one of my favorite characters from the show (second to Lion-O of course). I loved the fact that his design was based on a Tiger -- my all time favorite animal -- and his weapon of choice, his bolo-whip, was totally awesome! With a twirl of his whip he could become invisible and get the drop on those pesky Mutants. Plus, let's not forget he was the wisest cat on Third Earth, helping Panthro design and build many of the cats' cool inventions.
Again, Tygra is part of a larger Thundercats team drawing I'm doing for fun. Be sure to also check out my takes on Lion-O, Panthro, Cheetara, and Snarf if you haven’t already!
Next up is Wily Kit and Wily Kat. So until then... "Thundercats HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!"Illustration © Joe Costantini
Each year we like to come up with a Halloween greeting to send all of our loyal 2A! followers and subjects. This year we were throwing around ideas and I thought it would be fun to do a group caricature shot of the 2A! staff wearing costumes of their respective work mascots. We decided we wanted it to have a different look than our normal style, so Joe and I agreed that a painted final image would make it really stand out. Joe started it off by roughing in the poses of the characters, then I took that and focused on getting a likeness of everyone. After a couple passes between us, we settled on a final sketch. We then took that into Photoshop, and have both worked on it the past week to finish in time for Halloween. So here we are, after many hours, ready to unveil our hard work. I hope you like it, and have a safe and happy Halloween!Copyright © Two Animators! LLP
In honor of Halloween and all things scary, I present an original shot of Cassie and Vlad from Tim Seeley’s Hack/Slash comic book!
I recently got into reading this book and love the series. It’s about a girl named Cassie who survives a “slasher” attack and subsequently vows to rid the world of all slashers! She picks up a sidekick named Vlad -- who looks a lot like a slasher himself -- and travels the country taking down murderous monsters. Great stuff and a really fun read!
Anyway, I’m pretty psyched with how the paint job on this turned out. Especially given that it’s my second attempt at doing more painterly colors (see my first attempt here).
The guy in the pic is just some random dude... not a super villain slasher. I was also thinking about titling this "Dream Date," because I imagine this is how a date with Cassie might end. ;)
Here’s the black and white image too…

Hope you like them!Illustration © Joe Costantini
